Kachin or Kim-Phor
The Kachin or they call themselves is “Kim-Phor” migrate to Thailand from the Shan state in Burma, some groups
migrated from Yunnan the People's Republic of China together with the Lisu and Lahu. They immigrated only
they group in 1974 at DoiLand, Mae-eye District, Chiang Mai province and move to live in DoiVawee,
Mae Suay district, Chiang Rai province, then migrate come to live at Pangmayao, Maimokjam, Mae-eye district,
ChiangMai province before move come to stay at Baan NongKeaw when 25 ago. Kachin is closeness with Shan,
Lisu, Lahu and Akha people because of are the same species language as Tibet – Burma.
The language of the Kachins is related to the Tibeto-Burman group of Sino-Tibetan languages. A language related
to Burmese but differing from the latter in its numerous prefixes and well-developed system of suffixal forms
of the predicate verb denoting the person and number of the subject and object.
Lifestyle and House
The Social Structure
The Kachin tribe is the one of hilltribe people that respects with important position in the village. When has
performing a ceremony in the village, they will give a well- informed or who have a position to perform a ceremony.
The other people or the general person don't dare to do because it might be make a mistake which might affect
bad evil with a person who perform a ceremony. The important position in the community of Kachin tribe such as:
The village leader or administration leader is “Tua” have to govern, take care , happiness and sorrow
of the community and judge a case in community including communicate with the officer or the organization
from the outside that comes to contact or coordinate activities with the community. Include have the power
to making the decision and the problem that happen in the community as in the community gets
into trouble “Tua” will have the power in making the decision anyway. If story is big cases “Tua” will call
committee of the community comes to share in making the decision.
The leader for praying in the ceremony or “Tuem-Sa” The leader for praying in the ceremony or “Tuem-Sa”
the person who has the duty in performing ceremony karma in the community such as offer sacrifices
to the spirit. The inheriting position “Tuem-Sa” will have no investigating follows an ancestor but be learning
by oneself or come to beg for study with oneself. The person who take an interest will go to see for learn while
there is performing a ceremony if in the normally day can not study.
The assistant for praying leader in the ceremony or “Tuem-Jong”, The assistant for praying leader in the ceremony

everything in performing a ceremony with “Tuem-Sa”.
The Kachin people have work as farming such as grow rice, corn, peanut, sesame, pumpkin and right now they
plant a new fruit for them like a passion fruit, mango and avocado. The main income of Kachin people from grow corn,
peanut and other from work as employee or weaving.
To building a house of Kachin people like to build a house like have a platform. There are many bedrooms,
the roof covers with the bent, the wall made from the bamboo. There have two door, the front and backyard door.
They will have the shrine that in front of the entrance room. The shrine is the holy thing that the Kachin people respect
and prohibit to touch or break anyway.
Cultural and Traditional
In having the importance culture appointed position in Kachin tribe have no inheriting follows an ancestor but it like learning
by the well-informed will teach to who take an interest to study when only have performing a ceremony. Usual time can not
teach or learn.
Traditional Kachin society largely subsisted on the shifting cultivation of hill rice, supplemented by the proceeds of banditry
and feud warfare. Political authority in most areas lay with petty chieftains who depended upon the support of their immediate
patrilineal kinsmen and their affinal relatives. The Kachin live in mountainous country at a low population density,
but Kachin territory also includes small areas of fertile valley land inhabited by other peoples of Myanmar.
The traditional Kachin religion is a form of animistic ancestor cult entailing animal sacrifice. About 10 percent
of the Kachin are Christian.
Marriage and Family
Traditionally premarital sex was allowed; adolescents used to gather in the front apartment of a house evenings
for singing, recitations of love poetry, and lovemaking. These relations need not, and some of them could not,
lead to marriage. Bride-price is paid by the groom's father and the latter's lineage mates and may involve lengthy
negotiations with payments extending over many years. The bride's family provides her with a dowry
and helps defray the wedding costs.
The generality of Kachin family that is the medium-size has around 10 people live in one family. The man is the head
of the family. When a son grows up and get married will go to build new family. The power in making decision in a family
of Kachin that the man is influential in making a decision more than a woman. The work outside is the duty
of a man neither building a house, hunting, the beginning in the area to plants crops. The work indoor neither cooking,
seeking vegetable including feeding the pets is the duty of woman.
Religious, Beliefs, and Rituals
Formerly, Kachin tribe respect in ancestor, the guardian spirit and after that they change to respect the Christianity,
the Kachin change come to perform a ceremony that the church replaces the shrine such as the ceremony to eats new rice,
they will bring the that they will grow to attend in the ceremony and after harvest, then will bring some produce
of each family goes to perform a ceremony to beg the blessing and thanked to the god that who help to protect
to them to have the fertile produce.
The belief about the occurrence
When in the village has the new born, the midwife in a village comes to help in delivering a baby when deliver
then must cut the umbilical cord immediately and a midwife will give the naming immediately because
they believe in that must hasten name before a ghost because the ghost give naming a child before a person
that will make a child have a short-live. After naming finished they will have wrist tying gives a child,
pound the “Ja-Tong-Tuay” by have the ginger, egg fish as pound and blessing to a child together.
When finished give to the person who tastes and give blessing to a child too.
Belief about the water
When they still respect in the original, there performing a ceremony is offer sacrifices to a spirit as water ghost
for their have the water to uses all year, then have performing a ceremony “Sung-Hwa-Ka” that have the equipment
to use in performing a ceremony is pig or sometimes also a chicken, but can not use black chicken must is
red chicken and a male only the reason that be red because a god of kachin tell that. The god is a god
who is the Kachin respect, as a topmost god of Kachin.
The believe after death
The Kachin people there have believe after death that if die already will have sending soul of the dead
person by “Tuem-Sa” go to reach nine crosses then “Tuem-Sa” direct the way go to. They believe in
that if die already must go to stay in a city where that god prepare by have three city as a city for a person
who dies usual, the second is a city for person who not good dead, die a violent death, die unusual etc.
and the last one city is fire city or the hell, it is a city for the person who do evil when alive.
Style of dress for Kachin or Kim-Phor
The dressing of Kachin people as the same every age, have no difference.
The men hat has wild boar tooth for protects an enemy to revere, it like as influential. Men wear baggy pants,
usually in bright colors but normally wear a more western type of shirt or top.
The women dress, the shirt is black and has long hand arm, has the small ball as a silver decorates
on the chest of shirt, the sarong, they weaves, pitch stripes by oneself, has the cloth anticipates the waist,
has the stocking. Kachin people have belief about the silver ball that decorates in a woman shirt that it like
as the ground that a man of Kachin people has fame to the woman because they believe in that if do not
save one's face to a woman will do anything doesn't go up, the vegetables do not grow.
The principal musical instrument is the booming drum, which can be heard within a radius of 4 or 5 miles.
It is a long two-faced drum made of calf or water buffalo leather. It is called the Long Drum or Great Drum.
Then there are the large gongs and a flute called a "Dum Bar" on which is fixed a horn of the buffalo.
The Manau dance does not feature the one-sided. "Ozi" drum or cymbals as in another Kachin traditional dance,
the "Htawng Ka".
